Our History

OPS SYSTEMS, based in Rio Rancho, NM, provides strategic data management, preventive maintenance, and laboratory information management software solutions for water, wastewater, and energy plant operations.

An environmental engineer, Dr. Larry Blackwell, Ph.D., wrote a program for analysis of the wastewater and water treatment process. The OPS PAC product was MS-DOS based and sold for around $20,000. With the initial success of the program, a group of investors lead by Dr. Larry Blackwell founded Datastream in Greenville, SC. By 1984, Datastream had about 30 customers and appointed Manufacturers Representatives including the Dorner Company in Wisconsin. The price of the initial product soon dropped to $2,500, and sales grew.

In 1995, the Dorner Company bought the OPS product from Datastream. Scott Dorner, who started as a programmer with Datastream in 1988, transferred to this new division. The Windows version of the OPS product, OPS WiNTM, was introduced in October 1996. In October 1997, we introduced interfaces to YSI lab instruments and upgraded interfaces to Intellution and Wonderware control software.

In 1999, the next generation of our product, named OPS 32TM was brought to market. This product was a great improvement in terms of features and speed. In addition to the new architecture of OPS 32, Scott continued to meet client requests to expand capabilities with more interfaces, the use of handheld devices, and reporting templates.

Keeping astride with technology and demand, in 2002 we advanced the program yet again and released OPS SQLTM for running on Oracle and MS SQL databases.

Our second line of software products is computerized maintenance management system (CMMS). JOB Cal ®was introduced in October 1997. It creates a color-coded calendar that schedules preventive and corrective maintenance.

One of our many partnerships has been with Telecation. They have had the leading Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) software line established for over 20 years. In January 2004, OPS SYSTEMS acquired Telecation and its Aspen LIMS software. Aspen is a comprehensive program for tracking samples, chain of custody, results, reporting, and much more.

As a software-only company, our goal is to be responsive to our clients' needs and to keep pace with the latest in technological developments. OPS SYSTEMS is dedicated to understanding the needs of operators, analysts, technicians, and senior management in order to bring fully integrated solutions for their data management needs. Headquartered in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, this central location allows our organization to be easily accessible for our coast-to-coast customers. In addition, we have branch offices in Colorado, Wisconsin, and Ohio.
