Q10058 - INFO: Oracle OLEDB Provider versions and TNS Names

For Hach WIMS running on an Oracle backend, the Oracle OLEDB Provider is used to connect to the database.   The OLE DB provider is part of the Oracle ODAC and can be downloaded from Oracle website.  For Hach WIMS you MUST install the 32 bit provider.   Please see your Oracle Database Administrator for more information.

32 bit ODAC downloads (as of Nov 2013): http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/database/windows/downloads/index-101290.html

You should use a version of ODAC compatible with the version of your Oracle Server.  For example, if you have an Oracle 11g server you should use Oracle Provider for OLE DB 11.x.  Note: later versions of the provider can be used and are typically backward compatible with Oracle Servers for the prior 2 versions (for example the 11g provider can be used with Oracle 10g and Oracle 9i Servers)

The instructions below apply to installing ODAC using Oracle Universal Installer.

1. Download the ODAC zip file into a temporary directory. Note: Do not download this file into the "Tmp" directory.
2. Unzip its contents to the directory.
3. Run Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) by launching the setup.exe that was unzipped in the same directory.
4. OUI will lead you through ODAC installation on your machine. After the installation, you may delete the zip file and the unzipped folders and files.

Verify the Oracle Provider for OLE DB 11.x is checked and the Oracle Instant Client is checked (at the bottom of the list).  NOTE:  You do not need the Oracle Providers for ASP.NET or Oracle Developer Tools and it is suggested that you uncheck those installs to make the install easier.

Multiple Oracle homes

If there are multiple oracle homes installed, then there are multiple TNS Names files.  You can find them by searching the harddrive for *.ora or you can look in the oracle installation folder.

If after you have setup the naming for the oracle server, you sometimes may not be able to connect to it.  This is usually the tnsnames.ora file not being updated.

All tnsnames.ora files should be updated.

The best thing to do is search for all of them, then find the one that has the oracle server you specified.  Once that is copy the text as specified below into all of the tnsnames.ora files.

The first part before the equal sign (ORADEV in the example above) is what you put when you are modifying the Hach_WIMS_Client.ini file.

If the dns lookup name is not available, you can modify the (HOST = sv003) to (HOST = ###.###.###.###) where the last part with ### is the ip address.
